Supporting local communities

Ringwood police are taking the welfare
of locals to a new level, after establishing Maroondah’s
first welfare register to help keep an eye out for vulnerable
and elderly residents.
Sgt Sandra Haining said the program aimed
to keep isolated residents better connected with the community,
while tackling safety issues early on. ‘‘A lot
of elderly residents don’t want
to bother us,’’ Sgt Haining said. ‘‘If
their letter box gets knocked off or there’s vandalism,
they say that they don’t want to waste our time. Many
senior citizens feel vulnerable because of frailty, isolation,
loneliness and ill health.’’
She said the register would help reduce those
perceptions. Ringwood dealership Garry and Warren Smith presented
Maroondah district Insp Bruce Dickie with the Suzuki Swift that will be
used by police for house calls. Sgt Haining said the residents
on the register would have the safety and security of their
house assessed, and receive a monthly follow-up call from
volunteers to check on their wellbeing.
She said police would work with Maroondah Council, the MFB
and CFA to provide residents with advice and referrals to local
services. Registrations will soon open and public information
sessions will be held over the coming months. Details are available
